Object Description

Extremely rare and superb early 19th century (circa 1820) Anglo Chinese camphor wood Campaign secretaire chest of excellent patina.

The chest splits into two sections making transportation easier, the top section consisting of a camphor wood top with painted and engraved bamboo, cherry blossom and bird decoration with painted outer border with a solid ebony moulded edge.

This leading down to a secretaire drawer opening to reveal a fitted interior consisting of central door, various pigeon holes and smaller drawers for storage with writing surface, this leading down to two short drawers, the lower section consisting of two long drawers.

The drawers all having original brass recessed handles and brass escutcheons, the drawer fronts with various painted and engraved designs consisting of floral, foliate, bird and landscape decoration with painted outer border, each drawer surrounded by an ebony reeded moulding, this moulding also from top to bottom on the outer edge of the drawers.

The sides of the chest also consist of finely painted and engraved designs of floral and foliate decoration, the chest being supported by four carved feet.

This secretaire chest is in very good original condition for age with evidence of some old repairs, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home – an ideal piece for clothes storage as the camphor wood scent is good for keeping moths away.
