A Very Attractive And Highly Figured, Mid 19th Century Victorian Walnut Artists Folio Stand, The Lattice Design Hinged Rests With Ratcheted Diagonal Supports, Raised On Elegant Turned Spindles To Each End, United By Cross Stretchers And Four Sabre Legs, Terminating On Turned Cup Feet.
Antique portfolio stands that are still in good condition are not that easy to come across and are still very popular indeed, perhaps as much as anything because the demand for their original function is just as strong now as it was when they were first made.
Antique folio stands are items which generally feature adjustable sides which allow books or art to be opened and viewed at various different angles as suits. Some of them were also large enough to allow the owner to display a large selection of unframed paintings or prints in a pile, whilst leaving them easy to access and sort through. They were commonly used in libraries, museums and private homes as a way of showcasing valuable and rare collections and items.
This example dates from the middle of the 19th century and is very elegant, constructed from highly figured walnut timbers. It is very much still in working order and fit for original purpose.
As one would expect on this kind of item, which has sustained heavy use over the years, there are a few areas of minor historic restoration, none of which affect the integrity of the piece. It also appears to have one replacement foot and at some point in its history has had castors which are now lacking, however these are no great miss as often they can have a destabalising effect anyway.
As with all items which we offer for sale this antique walnut portfolio stand has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and along with a natural wax polish this has ensured that it is in its optimum condition and ready for immediate placement following purchase.
