Object Description

A fine French late 18th century mahogany window seat, of great colour and rare generous proportions. Stamped G.Jacob.
France, circa 1795.

Why we like it
A handsome, timeless design. With its curved sabre legs at either end, this bench relates to the ancient Greek ‘Klismos’ seats, often seen depicted on Attic pottery. Its superb quality, splendid patination and a recorded maker ensure it is a perfect example of an understated piece actually being a statement. Covered in sumptuous green gauffrage velvet.

Georges Jacob (1739-1814), maître ébéniste in 1765.
With their delicate scrolled backs, this bench demonstrate the supremely elegant and refined ‘Etruscan’ style employed by Georges Jacob from the 1780s. Among the most celebrated seat-furniture executed in these years are the chairs he supplied to Marie Antoinette’s dairy at Rambouillet in 1787.
