Object Description

Fine 19th Century Bakshayish Runner
4.37 x 0.90 m

Early Bakshayish pieces, woven in Persia’s mountainous Northwest, are the close relatives of Serapi-Heriz carpets, though are known for being more expressive and more spontaneous than their Heriz cousins and, as a result, are widely sought after among collectors and designers alike.

This striking c. 1890s example boasts a rare, all-over design, borrowed from earlier Azerbaijani weavings of the 18th Century, over an unusual muted grey ground. It features wonderful colour scheme, all in organic dyes, with tones of muted terracotta red, sky blue, ivory and tan in the central field. The design employs a repeated diamond motif, framed by a decorative three-part border, with charming floral patterns throughout.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders and short fringes on all sides – remarkable for a piece of this age.

A sophisticated tribal runner, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
