Object Description
A very finely carved Mid-19th-century original giltwood French Louis XIV style sofa upholstered in Voyage linen. Circa 1860
The rectangular back with an arched top having acanthus leaf carved giltwood scrolling arms terminating in finely carved male masks which are very rare to find on a sofa like this.
The masks are held by acanthus leaf scrolled supports raised on tapering panelled legs headed by gadrooned and foliate collars, joined by Vitruvian- scrolled foliate H-framed stretchers terminating on gadrooned feet.
In excellent condition retaining the original gilt work, this sofa has been reupholstered by us in a good quality Voyage linen with gimp braiding having the original feather down cushion.
A very comfortable, decorative sofa with the original gilt work and exquisite carvings.
This rare sofa stands extremely well in the flesh as the images do not seem to do it justice, definitely worth viewing.
