Fine c. 1900 Peking Carpet
3.42 x 2.77 m
Chinese carpets and textiles have a rich history of weaving, dating back many centuries, particularly in the northern region of Ningxia. As these pieces began to catch the eye of the US and European markets, around the turn of the 20th Century, the weaving centers moved to the capital, then known as Peking, which enabled the creation of finer, grand-scale pieces. The designs became simpler, and more asymmetrical, tending more toward modern Western furnishing tastes.
This elegant Peking carpet has a fine weave, which lends a real sense of clarity to its drawing, with a soft ivory field, well-complimented by the denim blue tones in its design – a simple, understated colour palette, which, despite its age, gives this piece a modern feel.
Wonderfully preserved, and still retaining its original fringes and borders on all sides, this early Peking carpet is in great condition for everyday use, with a minor age-related patina.
A design classic, with a timeless charm that would suit either a contemporary or traditional interior space.
