Object Description

Fine c. 1900s Tabriz Carpet
4.50 x 3.32 m

The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has long been known as a centre for Persian arts, culture, and literature, but especially for the quality of its carpets, with a tradition dating back as early as the 14th Century. Thanks to its location, incorporating influences from nearby Azerbaijan and Turkey, its weavings are among the most diverse of any city in Iran, and antique Tabriz carpets are especially distinguished by their tight weaves and close adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.

This understated antique Tabriz carpet features a rare, muted blue-grey ground, with a subtle variation in tone across the ground, which lends a real sense of depth and character to its otherwise restrained, monochrome overall composition, framed by a wide border. Being an earlier example, this piece boasts a remarkably tight weave, and lustrous high-grade wool, lending a crisp clarity to its drawing.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its outer borders still present on all sides – all the vegetable dyed colours in this carpet have taken on a fine patina with age.

A timeless example, with a discreet elegance to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
