Object Description

This fine Commonwealth silver Puritan spoon was made in London in 1651 by Stephen Venebles and measures 7 inches in length, it bears the engraved initials of P over WM to the top of the stem on the reverse side where it is also fully hallmarked along the stem, it has the crowned leopards head stamped into the bowl with the bowl being of very good gauge and well formed. This spoon is featured in the Christie’s catalogue of the Biggs collection of early spoons dated September 1978 and is on page 22 lot number 66 which is photographed and states this spoon is amongst the earliest recorded spoons of this type. A superb spoon in excellent condition weighing 1.75 ounces or 55 grams.
