Object Description

Fine Early Sarab Runner
5.56 x 1.80 m

Sarab, in the north-west of Persia, has long been known as an important weaving centre, known for the creativity of its designs and the wide variety of colours used, as well as for borrowing elements from weavings of the nearby Caucasus region, lending these works a sense of charming tribal naivety and carefree spontaneity. Due to the size of the looms traditionally used in this region, Sarab is especially known for producing high-quality runners and gallery rugs, of which this piece, dating to the late 19th Century, is a prime example.

This runner employs an understated, earthy colour palette, with vegetable-dyed camel and ochre tones in its monochrome all-over drawing, over a ground ranging from grey to subtle browns – a delicate abrash (or, colour variation) which adds a real sense of depth and character. The central field is framed by a simple, decorative border.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides. Its colours have taken on a fine, age-related patina.

A charming, elegant piece, which would feel at home in any interior.
