Object Description
Fine Kuba-Shirvan Rug, c. 1890
1.60 x 1.22 m
Antique Kuba-Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.
This 19th Century piece is a particularly fine example of its type, with a repeated rams-horn motif across a cornflower blue field, which has a wonderful abrash – or, colour variation – which lends a real sense of character and depth to the weaving.
A charming tribal piece, in very good condition for everyday use, which would add character to any setting.
