Object Description

A fine quality early 19th century (circa 1820) Regency mahogany drum or library table with fine, faded top and unusual carved base, possibly Irish.

This fine quality table consists of a black leather tooled revolving top with outer banding of mahogany and boxwood stringing leading down to a moulded edge of mahogany and boxwood stringing.

This leads down to eight mahogany frieze drawers with boxwood stringing decoration, all oak lined with recessed brass locks similar to Bramah, one drawer stamped with number 2326 – this number possibly being linked to a cabinetmaker or being an item from an inventory belonging to an important house.

The top is supported on an unusual four-splay carved base consisting of four superbly carved S scroll supports leading down to carved paterae to each corner and square plinth with carved scroll decoration, the four splay legs consisting of superbly carved foliate decoration to the front and scroll and foliate decoration to the sides terminating on original brass castors.
