Object Description

A fine quality mid 19th century floral marquetry walnut lowboy (or chest of drawers) of serpentine form.

This decorative piece consists of a burr walnut marquetry veneered serpentine shaped top inlaid with various woods including central urn with floral and foliate decoration, birds and butterflies with boxwood stringing and moulded cross grain edge.

This leads down to two serpentine shaped cockbeaded drawers, each with floral marquetry decoration and boxwood stringing and two decorative ormolu handles and central ormolu escutcheon, the drawers having oak linings and leading down to a shaped frieze below inlaid with floral decoration.

To either side of the drawers the corner panels consist of two separate square floral marquetry panels with boxwood stringing, the sides also having floral marquetry designs.

This leads down to four elegant tapered cabriole inlaid legs, each having a moulding to the outer edge and supported by hoof feet.

This is a very versatile piece, it is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
