Object Description

A fine quality pair of late 19th century French bronzes of Socrates and who is believed to be Leon of Salamis with superb patina both supported on carrara marble plinths.

This pair of bronzes both seated and wearing Classical attire, Socrates holding a hemlock cup the second bronze who is believed to be Leon of Salamis holding a scroll.

Socrates, the Classical Greek philosopher was believed to be one of the founders of Western philosophy and was sentenced to death by hemlock poisoning.

Leon of Salamis, a historical figure of highly reputation was believed to be the renowned Athenian General of The Peloponnesian War.

Socrates was ordered to arrest Leon of Salamis and bring him to Athens for execution but Socrates refused his orders as he feared committing injustice more than fearing death itself.

This pair of bronzes are in excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home or collection.
