Object Description

Floral Bolinpush suzani textile from Central Asia
Uzbekistan, Early 20th Century
Length 161cm, width 161cm

Exquisitely handcrafted and embroidered in the early 20th century, this Bolinpush suzani hails from the historic town of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The textile’s design centres on a petite marigold bloom, with larger, similar forms alternating between rich maroon and marigold shades emanating from it. Surrounding these are abstract, symmetrical black floral motifs within a maroon border, complemented by repeated black and maroon patterns. The suzani is framed by embroidered borders in maroon and cream, before ending in a striking, black-coloured textile edge.

Bolinpush suzanis are culturally significant textiles, traditionally used during Central Asian weddings to protect the bride from evil spirits. Each suzani contributes its charm and significance to the matrimonial event.

Exclusively crafted by women, suzanis were made in sections, with various artisans contributing to different parts of the same piece. They were then sewn together to form the final textile, as suggested by the horizontal stitch marks on this piece.

Historically, the designs were drawn onto the cotton using a sharpened reed pen, or ‘kalam’, guiding the intricate hand embroidery.

This remarkable Bolinpush suzani, with its vibrant colours and patterns, encapsulates Central Asian traditions and would add a distinct cultural richness to any interior, serving as an impressive wall hanging, for instance.
