Object Description
An interesting mahogany and brass Folding Stick Stand.
The Stick or Umbrella Stand is wall mounted and its depth can be reduced when not in use. The mahogany and brass ring, that holds the sticks, is held in its horizontal position by an angled brass support bar. Lifting this brass bar releases it and allows it to slide down to rest parallel to the mahogany back. As it does so, the ring that holds the sticks also falls parallel to the back.
This Stick Stand is designed as a space saver when not in use which then begs the question of where it might of been used. It would work well in a narrow hall or perhaps a restaurant or Gentleman’s Club. It is stamped 6 to the back which may be a design number or perhaps denotes that it was one of a least 6 in use which suggests a public rather than a residential place.
It is well made with a simple moulded edge to the mahogany and good brass fittings. The painted tin cup to hold the tips of the sticks might possibly be replaced but certainly is the correct size and could well be original. The brass fitted to the ring both strengthens its construction and adds to its look. Likewise, the scroll to the bottom of the support bar adds a subtle sense of style.
The size for use is given.
