Object Description

Red carnelian set in a heavy gold ring

This strongly engraved, full fox mask intaglio is after a design by John Scott (1774-1827), included in ‘Knight’s Modern and Antique Gems’. A similar image in the Victoria and Albert Museum is recorded as designed by Abraham Cooper (1787-1868) and engraved by Scott.

Scott specialised in animal prints, most notably his depictions of racehorses for the ‘Sporting
Magazine’. He remained active in London until 1821, when he suffered a stroke.

Self-taught by copying horse prints, Cooper was elected ARA in 1817 and full Academician in 1820.
