Object Description

A 19th century Louis XVI style extending game table made of acajou mouchete mahogany and adorned with high quality ormolu mounts. The game table hosts an interesting mechanism: the back legs can be pulled out by pressing a hidden wooden button underneath that allows the side to extend to double the size of the table. The card table opens to a baize lined interior, perfect for playing cards. Intricate 18th century style ormolu flower swags embellish the corners, the legs are headed by acanthus cast mounts. On fluted tapering legs with stiff-leaf cast sabots.
The table is stamped ‘2316’.

Object History

The game table can be compared with the production of the Paris based design company ‘Maison Jansen’ which was founded in 1880 by Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928). Jansen is considered the first truly global design firm producing furniture of contemporary design and in the styles of the 18th century.
