Object Description

An early 18th century Régence giltwood mirror of slightly arched shape surrounded by marginal mirror plates on all sides set within enriched mouldings. The giltwood cresting of acanthus leaves and flowers overlaps the top bordering mirror plate. The frame is carved with strapwork, foliage and flowers, the outset corners are accentuated with bold acanthus leave carving. The central mirror plate as well as its marginal plates can be due to its corrosion products identified as tin-mercury amalgam mirrors and are probably the original mirror plates.
Gilding in consolidated condition with a rich and beautiful patina, some refreshed areas.
