French, early 19th Century
Height 53cm, width 37.5cm, depth 13.5cm
This fine Empire period mantel clock is crafted from gilt bronze. The clock includes a sculptural surmount of Venus accompanied by Cupid. Venus sits atop the square clock case, her legs thrown to one side, while Cupid kneels and looks towards her. The clock case is inset with a circular dial and is flanked on one side by a column surmounted by a lovebird. The case is raised upon an integral stepped gilt bronze base, which is adorned to the front with a relief scene of putti hunting within a pastoral landscape.
