Object Description
French 1930’s marine painting of a rolling sea, probably the English Channel with a distant view of the white cliffs of Dover. While the subject is maritime the handling of the paint is very much of the French painterly tradition. The subject is reminiscent of Courbet yet the technique is suggestive of Soutine and prefigures the widespread use of paint applied with palette knife. Signed and dated bottom left. Signature indistinct. Oil on Canvas in later frame. Painting dimensions framed: 54 x 67 cm. Framed: 63 x 76 cm.
