Object Description

A superb early 18th century silver two-handled cup and cover with fine quality hand chased engraving in the style of Ellis Gamble. Lovely plain style, very good weight and perfect size to hold a wine bottle. To the front is a marital coat of arms for Ponsonby and Cooper and to the reverse is a cypher topped by a serpent and cow crests, repeated on the lid. Beautiful gilded interior.

Maker Edmund Pearce
Sterling silver.

Marks. Stamped under the foot and on the edge of the lid with the London leopard head, lion passant and maker’s mark. No date letter however Edmund Pearce’s sterling mark was entered in 1720. There is a scratchweight below 81=13.

Arms. These are the arms of Ponsonby quartered with Cooper (later Ashley-Cooper); the crests are for Ponsonby and Ashley-Cooper who married in 1814. It is likely that the cup was engraved no earlier than 1835.

Inscription under the foot reads “Julia Neilson-Terry – A token of affection from her devoted friends and public. 21st March 1888 to 21st March 1938“.

Edmund Pearce, London silversmith, apprenticed to Henry Beesley 1693, turned over to Phillip Rollos 1697, free 1704. 1st mark entered as largeworker 1705. 2nd mark (Sterling) 1720.

In very good condition. Sharp engraving. There is some scratching underneath where the scratchweight is situated.
