Object Description

A Delightful 18th Century George II Period Giltwood
And Gesso Wall Mirror Having Attractive Open Carved
Shell Flanked By C Scrolls Surmount Above Replacement
Rectangular Mirror Plate Surrounded By Elegant Foliate
Carved Strapwork Frame

( This incredibly elegant mirror dates to the 2nd quarter of
the 18th century when the somewhat cumbersome designs
of many Queen Anne and George 1st style mirrors were
beginning to meet the fresh and more elegant, delicate
pierced designs that were to come in the 3rd quarter of the
18th century. That combination of styles, along with the fact
that this mirror has clearly been extremely well loved and
looked after, has created a beautiful article that would look
at home on just about any wall, in any house, alongside any
other furniture and art. The gilding itself has a wonderful mellow
feel to it and is mostly original, having just been touched up
in a few small areas over the years. The mirror plate is a
replacement, but still old in its own right and looks like it has been
in situ for around 100 years or so. There are very little structural
defects to speak of, just the odd repaired very minor break and crack
in the frame and obviously over the years it has picked up a few
bumps, scrapes and blemishes which all add to the items rich history. )
