A fine pair of antique silver candle holders with tapering acanthus decorated stems and circular bases with an engraved owl crest. Classic plain style. The nozzles have a shaped frieze. Heavy gauge silver, unfilled.

Marks. Both stamped around the base rim with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks, the nozzles with lion and makers mark.
Biography – John Scofield (or Schofield), highly prominent late 18th century London silversmith. No record of apprenticeship of freedom. 1st mark entered as plateworker in 1776 with Robert Jones. 2nd mark alone 1778. 3rd mark 1787. Well known for his impeccable craftsmanship and elegant restrained taste. His candlesticks and candelabra are highly prized.
