Object Description

An excellent quality cup of plain design with twin scroll handles and raised on a pedestal foot. Original bright gilt interior. Compact size. Excellent weight and feels good in the hand. The front is hand engraved with an armorial within a shield, the reverse with a lion crest.

Weight 400g, 12.8 troy oz.
Spread 16.4cm. Diameter 10cm. Height 14.4cm, 5.6 ins.
London 1772.
Maker probably John Delmester.
Sterling silver.

Would make a useful desk accessory for pens etc.

Marks. Stamped on the underside with a full set of English silver marks.

Robert Abercromby, London silversmith. no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark entered 11th May 1731 as largeworker, in partnership with George Hindmarsh. 2nd mark alone 5th October 1731. 3rd mark 23rd June 1739. 4th mark 29th April 1740. Specialist salver maker.
