Object Description

A handsome antique silver mug of baluster form having a scroll handle with acanthus leaf mount. Excellent plain style. Good gauge silver and large size.

Marks. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

John King, apprenticed to Henry Brind 1750, turned over to William Shaw 1751, free 1757. First mark entered as plateworker 1775. 2nd mark 1775. 3rd mark 1779. 5th mark 1785. 6th mark 1789. His son Joseph was apprenticed to him 1780.

Object Literature

The term “mug” is traditionally used for a single-handed, lidless drinking vessel. They are nearly all of either pint or half pint capacity. Antique silver mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680.

Object Condition

The mug is in very condition with a minimal amount of wear consistent with age.
