George III Antique Silver Salver, London 1782

Object Description

An elegant antique silver salver with swept feet and bead border. To the centre there is a hand engraved armorial within a decorative cartouche a crest and armorial. All within a wide border of foliate scroll engraving.

Biography – John Crouch I of Middlesex, London silversmith, apprenticed to Richard Rugg 1758, free 1765. 1st mark in partnership with Thomas Hannam c.1773.

John Crouch II, apprenticed to his father John Crouch I 1790, free 1797. 1st mark entered as junior partner with Thomas Hannam 1799. 2nd mark alone 1808. Died 1837.

Thomas Hannam of Somerset, London silversmith, apprenticed to John Café 1754, turned over to William Café, free 1761. and went into partnership with John Crouch in 1765.

The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters. Their earlier marks also appear on cast candlesticks, very likely due to Hannam’s apprenticeship to the Cafes.

Object Condition

Crisp engraved armorial and borders. Stamped on the reverse with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks. The scroll engraving to the centre border is probably 19th century.
