Object Description
An elegant pair of oval trays of plain, classical form with gadroon borders and dainty splayed feet. Excellent gauge silver. Beautifully crisp hand engraving to the centre with a coat of arms for the Burton-Plunkett family.

Marks. Each is stamped on the reverse with a matching set of English silver hallmarks. One is inscribed with the scratchweight 20=4.
Arms. The marital arms of Anglo-Irish Admiral (James) Ryder Burton (1795 – 2 August 1876) and the Hon. Anna Maria Plunkett (10 Nov 1787 – 26 April 1856) married on 22 July 1822. Anna Maria was daughter of Randall Plunkett, 13th Baron Dunsany and his wife, Margaret Archdekin. The Burton arms engraved are those of counties Stafford, Leicester & Derby with the crest of Burton of Pollacton, co. Carlow, an Irish Burton branch.
Admiral Ryder Burton’s son Colonel Francis Augustus Burton, Coldstream Guards (1825 – 1865) married Sarah Frances Elizabeth Sawbridge-Erle-Drax (1834–1905) on 14 September 1853. Sarah was the daughter and heiress of the Erle-Drax family of Charlborough House, County Dorset. Further information available on request.
Maker: Thomas Hannam & John Crouch
Thomas Hannam completed his apprenticeship to John Café in 1761 and went into partnership with John Crouch in 1765. The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters. Their earlier marks also appear on cast candlesticks, very likely due to Hannam’s apprenticeship to the Cafes.
