Object Description

An attractive antique silver basting spoon in the popular Old English pattern. The long slender handle is prettily engraved with bright cutting and a star pattern.

Weight 96 grams, 3 troy ounces.
Length 29.8cm. Bowl 9×4.9cm.

This useful spoon can be used for serving vegetables or ladling gravy and would make a perfect addition to any table setting.

Marks. Stamped on the back of the handle with a full set of English silver hallmarks

Maker: William Sumner

William Sumner, flatware maker, was apprenticed under Thomas Chawner. Worked in partnership with Richard Crossley 1775 – 1782 (mark WS/RC). His first mark was entered in 1782. His widow Mary and daughter Elizabeth were also registered as silver spoon makers.

The basting spoon, also known as a gravy spoon, was larger than a table spoon and was used for basting roast meats. Nowadays they are usually used as serving spoons.

This large spoon is in very good condition with minor wear consistent with age.
