Object Description

Very elegant serpentine fronted George III Chippendale side table.

A fine mahogany Chippendale side table
A very elegant serpentine fronted mahogany George III Chippendale side table , made in England c. 1780. This side table has a shaped top with thumb molding above a single long drawer revealing the oak carcass. It, marvellously, retains its original handles and lock. The whole is raised on refined cabriole legs terminating in rhomboid angular feet.

Chippendale furniture
Thomas Chippendale was one a principal furniture maker of the George III period. In Georgian England, his designs were so popular that ‘Chippendale’ became a style in its own right. He published his ‘Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director’ in 1754, and the desire for Chippendale furniture was so great that there were several later editions in the 1760s. Chippendale furniture broadly fell into 3 categories: rococo, gothic and chinoiserie, and the Chippendale style became widely replicated by craftsmen and craftswomen across Georgian England.
