George III Silver Candlabras

Object Description

A handsome pair of antique sterling silver candelabras with detachable 3 light branches and sconces. Very attractive design with a baluster stem and shaped bases with shell motifs. Heavy cast silver and good colour. The 2 branches can be assembled on one candlestick to make a 5 branch candelabra. Total weight 2755 grams, 88.5 troy ounces. Height 41.5 cm (3 branch candelabra), 48 cm (5 branch candelabra), 22.5 cms (candlesticks). Candlesticks – London 1760 by John Hyatt & Charles Semore. The candelabra branches were made later to match the candlesticks – London 1891 by Johnson Walker & Tolhurst.

Biography – John Hyatt, London silversmith, apprenticed to James Gould 1733, free 1741. Mark entered as large worker 1742. 2nd mark in oartnership with Charles Semore 1757.

Charles Semore, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. Mark entered in partnership with John Hyatt 1757. Semore (or Seymour), was also in partnership with William Lancaster in 1773 as smallworker without any mark struck.

Object Condition

These fine candelabras are in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Excellent patina. Originally from a larger set, the candelabras are numbered 1 and 4 throughout.
The candlesticks are fully matching and are stamped with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks underneath the candlestick base; the candlestick tops and nozzles have the lion mark and makers mark (some rubbing).
The candelabra branches and nozzles are fully matching and stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks; the branch extension piece has the lion, assay and makers mark.
