Object Description

George Jones Majolica wine cooler which features horned Bacchus head handles on either side with trailing grape vines, leaves and grapes. The lid has a knop in the form of three rams heads, embellished with grapes and vines. Colouration: turquoise, green, brown, are predominant. This piece represents Bacchus – the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Dionysus, god of fertility. Later known chiefly as the god of wine and pleasure. The piece bears maker’s marks for the George Jones pottery. Book reference ,’Majolica A complete History and illustrated Survey’ by Karmason & Stacke, page 99, figure 1.

Pot: Good. RESTORATION. Stabilised and retouched hairline to the rim. Cover: Generally Good. RESTORATION. Stabilised and retouched hairline to rim. Filled chip to leaf. Knop reglued and join retouched.
