Object Description

Designed by George Walton (1867-1933) this clock is archetypical of Arts and Crafts design. George Walton was influenced by William Morris, and worked alongside Mackintosh, fellow alumnus of the Glasgow School.

The delicate nickel-plated hammered brass case has a riveted flat top, domed in the centre. The clock dial is framed with a typically-styled Arts & Crafts tree, the polished form in relief to the hammered background. Eight riveted columns raise the case by around two inches, each finished in a leaf. In the spaces between, the case has stylised blue-enamel topped trees.

The French drum clock movement retains its original lever platform escapement, and is rear-wound, with a duration of 8 days. It is yet to be overhauled, but will be sold fully serviced, with a 3-year guarantee.

The 3 1/4-inch white enamel convex dial is in perfect original condition.

There were variations in finish of this clock; we have sold others in the past which had been copper plated, and another silver plated but lacking the enamel detailing. With this example now for sale, we were delighted to find the original nickel-plating almost all intact beneath a blackened layer from many years of neglect. It is rare to find one in such excellent original condition.
