Object Description

An Exceptional Quality Late 18th Century Mahogany Commode,
Or Chest Of Drawers, Of Elegant Serpentine Bombe Form Having
Superbly Figured And Crossbanded Top Over Three Mahogany
Lined Drawers With Original Brass Handles Raised On Elegant
Original Splayed Feet With Shaped Apron

(It became popular in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century for cabinet
makers to imitate French furniture design patterns and this is a good
example of that. Clearly emanating from an extremely high end
workshop, possibly that of ” Henry Hill, Marlborough “, the choice of
mahogany veneers is exceptional, the shape impossibly elegant and
quality throughout impeccable. Only a top cabinetmaker would have
had the skills to execute the various different features within this piece
and of course the funds to use such high quality brass fittings plus
use relatively high end mahogany just to construct the drawer linings
from. This chest absolutely oozes class and elegance and would be a
fine addition to any room, in any setting. As fit for purpose as the day it
was made the chest is in excellent condition and a real treasure. It is
not all that often that these kind of pieces with this kind of originality
and condition come to market and we are sure that it will prove an
excellent acquisition to somebody whether they are looking to grow
an existing collection, or indeed just looking for one feature piece)
