Object Description

A very useful little antique silver jug with a cast decorative border terminating in a foliate shell. Suitable as a small sauceboat.

Weight 84 grams, 2.7 troy ounces.
Height 3.2cm. Length 14.1cm. Width 8.1cm.

Maker Charles Fox.
Sterling silver.
19th century.

Marks. Stamped under the pouring lip with a full set of English silver hallmarks. The makers mark is a little rubbed but clearly “CF”.

Charles Fox I, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark entered as largeworker in partnership with James Turner. 2nd mark alone 1804.

Charles Fox II, son of Charles Fox I, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. 1st mark entered as plateworker 1822. 2nd 3rd, 4th and 5th marks 1823. 6th mark 1838. Known for his consistently high quality work.

Object Literature

The antique silver pap boat was originally used as a shallow feeding dish for a child or invalid. These appeared circa 1710 and fell out of manufacture about 120 years later. With their smooth elegant shape, they make ideal servers for sauce.

Object Condition

The little serving boat is in very good condition with moderate signs of wear commensurate with age.
