Object Description

An early 19th century Georgian mahogany box desk.

The box has a brass bound edge with military plate handles and a brass bramagh lock which is stamped with a crown.

The box has a maker’s label inside ‘M Tait, 41 Cornhill London, Manufacturer of Razors, Fine Cutlery, Copying Machines, Dressing Cases, Portable Writing Desks & English and Foreign Perfumery’.

The interior has a writing slope with two compartments underneath, a pair of locking inkwells and a pen storage area.

The box has it’s original blue velvet writing surface with a tooled edge and underneath the slope is a secret compartment.

The box comes with three documents which were in the box when it was purchased:

A City of Edinburgh Certificate of Proclamation (Marriage) between Robert Cooper & Janet Galloway 25th August 1839.

A Certificate of Birth & Baptism Daughter Lillian 24 August 1840.

A Certificate of Birth & Baptism Son Charles 3rd July 1843.
