Object Description

A Superb Quality 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Library Bookcase Of Relatively Small Proportions Having Inlaid Cornice And Two Astragal Glazed Doors Enclosing Adjustable Shelves To Top Over Wonderfully Figured Pair Of Oval Panelled Cupboard Doors Enclosing Adjustable Shelf To Base Raised On Elegant Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

This is a really rather charming bookcase which dates to the very best English furniture making period of the 2nd half of the 18th century. It retains a lovely colour and patina throughout as well as many original panes of glass to the top section. The matchstick inlaid cornice is also an unusual and elegant feature which is very much a sign of quality. We particularly like the oval panelled doors to the bottom which are a really rather striking feature as well.

It is of course a most practical piece of furniture as well and unlike a large majority of antique Georgian bookcases it is particularly well suited to the modern home due to its sensible proportions.  The two shelves in the top section are adjustable allowing for flexibility in terms of the size of the items which are displayed in there as is the shelf in the bottom section. The overall condition is very good and the bookcase is ready to go straight into active service in a home or office.
