Object Description

A rare George III mahogany longcase clock with regulator dial layout, by J. Atkinson, Gateshead.

The break-arch case features fine flame mahogany veneers to the trunk door and plinth base. The base has applied panel decoration to match the edging of the door, and the clock is raised on a moulded double skirt.

The 12 inch painted dial is the striking aspect of this clock – the background is a lovely rich mid-blue, the angles with delicate raised gilt rococo scrolls, beneath an arch painted with an oval landscape view.
The white centre has subsidiary seconds over a Roman numeral hour dial and is signed J. Atkinson, GATESHEAD, within an outer Arabic minute ring.

The four pillar rack and bell striking movement has an anchor escapement and fitted with an iron falseplate cast with the name of the dial-makers SHAW & Co..

Object History

Two makers with the surname Atkinson and the initial J. are recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Gateshead during the latter part of the 18th century; James whose dates are noted as 1770-77 and Joseph who worked from circa 1775 until his death in 1804. Joseph is listed in the 1801 Mitchell’s Directory of Newcastle upon Tyne & Gateshead trade directory at Low Church Street, Gateshead. It is probable that James and Joseph were brothers, the current clock is most likely to be by Joseph.
