Object Description
A mahogany campaign Naval Chair, made to fold quickly.
The chair has a replaced drop in seat which, when removed, allows the chair to quickly fold. The sides of the chair are hinged so that the front legs will fold last against the back in one quick movement. These hinged sections have short mortice and tenon joints to add extra strength when the chair is set up. This form of chair is associated with the navy because it was essential for furniture to be cleared from the decks quickly when the call to arms was given. Chairs with legs that needed to be unscrewed etc. were slower to dismantle.
The chair has a pierced splat and the back legs kick out towards the bottom so that it will still stand when folded. Copies of Naval Chairs can be seen on board HMS Victory. Late 18th Century.
