Object Description

A Very Attractive George III Period Satinbirch Wood Tea Caddy With Elegant Specimen Wood Parquetry Inlaid Decoration To Top And Further Tunbridge Ware Inlaid Decoration Throughout Having Double Lidded Interior.

This is a lovely, attractive design and remains in excellent condition. The parquetry and tunbridge ware decorations would both have taken an extremely skilled craftsman to execute and the satin birch veneers are also particularly nice adding a real soft, mellow colour to the piece. It comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished in our workshops before being offered for sale.

Tea was of course a very precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves and therefore keep it away from the potential wandering hands of any staff.

Circa 1800.

Height 4.5in.
Width 8.25in.
Depth 5.25in.
