Object Description
Georgian Sampler, 1774, by Mary Lambert. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, red, dark brown, pink, blue and green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-17. Verses read, ‘If you desire to worship God Alight first in the morning pray and Last at Night Crave for his Blessing On Your Labours all and in Distress for his assistance call.’ And, ‘See how the lilies flourish white and Fair See how the Ravens Fed from Heaven are. Then neer Distrust thy God For Cloth and Bread Whilst Lilies Flourish and the Raven F.’. Signed and dated, ‘Mary Lambert Finished this Sample December the 12 Anno Domini 1774’. A wonderful set of motifs, including a colourful potted flowering plant to the centre, birds in trees, flowering trees and fruit baskets. Framed in a black antique wooden frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
