Object Description

Georgian Sampler with country scene, stitched in 1810 by Mary Peers. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours red, gold, green, blue, silver and brown. Verse reads, ‘THAT conscience must your life direct, In every thing you do; Nor must you fail in one respect, Her precepts to pursue. Whate’er she dictates, with delight, And pleasure still obey: Her smiles shall yield soft rest at night, And pleasure all the day. Her counsel then my child obey, Her precepts still attend, Let conscience guide thee all the day, And be thy constant Friend.’. Signed and dated, ‘Mary Peers 1810’. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a country scene with a man fishing and a girl stood behind. Sheep in the foreground, trees in the background. And a country house with a garden. A floral garland across the top, with silk tassles at either end. An angel above. Framed in an old ‘molded composition over wood’ frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
