Object Description

A Late George III mahogany partners library writing table stamped ‘Gillows.Lancaster’.

English, Circa 1800.

The rectangular top inset with a Greek key blind tooled leather inset writing surface, enclosed by a narrow crossband and reeded edge, above four opposing short cockbeaded frieze drawers with later circular brass ring handles. Raised on panelled headers above very slender ring turned and finely reeded tapering legs terminating on brass cappings and castors.
Stamped to the drawer ‘GILLOWS.LANCASTER’.

The ‘Gillows.Lancaster’ stamp on this partners writing table is documented as being used by the firm of Gillows during the period 1790-1800, while the design is also typical of Gillows output during the final decade of the 18th century, S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Suffolk, p. 95.

Offered in fully restored condition this practical and elegant writing table will work well in any traditional office / study.
