Orpheus & Eurydice

According to ancient mythology, the Greek hero and musician, Orpheus, was granted access to the underworld to recover his deceased wife, Eurydice. However, there was one condition: Orpheus must not look back until they reach the light.

This relief depicts the musician to the right, with lyre in hand, as he turns to look back at his wife too soon. Behind Eurydice to the plaque left is Hades, King of the Underworld, his hand in hers as he claims her back to the underworld.
