Object Description
A lovely hallmarked silver table lighter made by Albert Edward Jones of Birmingham in 1928. This fine lighter is very much in the Arts and Crafts style and is made by one of the leading lights of the movement.
Albert Edward Jones (1878 – 1954) trained at the Birmingham School of Art and was a Guildsman of the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft. He founded his firm in 1902.
Around the lighter is a chased inscription “There is no herb like it under the canopy of heaven” which is a quote from Kingsley Amis’ book Westward Ho! in 1855, referencing tobacco – a perfect quote for a lighter!
