Object Description
Handwoven Modernist Tibetan Carpet
4.20 x 3.00 m
Rug weaving in Tibet stretches back hundreds if not thousands of years, though experienced a real renaissance in the early 20th Century, brought by the greater access to rich dyes, and a greater diversity in these carpets designs, combining traditional Tibetan motifs with elements borrowed from Chinese weavings.
This contemporary example represents a modern reimagination of the high-end Tibetan carpets of this earlier era, inspired by mid-century design – the artist has employed traditional grand-scale scrolling motifs across the field, in soft hay and caramel tones, creating a delicate ton-sur-ton effect, framed by a wide border; an open, restrained composition, with lends the work a feeling of space and balance.
A finely handwoven and effortlessly stylish carpet, combining traditional designs and weaving techniques with a modern aesthetic sensibility.
