Object Description

Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Dutch. A captivating set of four Gothic Revival oak side chairs with a progressive architectural A frame design to the legs. These chairs pay homage to the illustrious Gothic Revival period and draw inspiration from the visionary works of A. W. N. Pugin in Great Britain and Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc in France. They bring the spirit of the Gothic Revival and the Arts and Crafts Movements together, fusing the past with the present.

Berlage is celebrated as the Father of Modern Architecture in the Netherlands, and his designs closed the boundaries between the Traditionalists and the Modernists, inspiring a new generation of Dutch architects in the 1920s, inspiring movements such as the Traditionalists, the Amsterdam School, De Stijl and the New Objectivists.

He designed Holland House in Bury Street in the City of London which was constructed in 1916 for a Dutch shipping company and stands as a testament to his visionary higher level and understanding of architecture and design.

He travelled extensively through Europe and also visited America in 1911 where he was heavily influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. He received the British RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1932.

Berlage works of art find a rightful place among esteemed collections of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum de Fundatie, and Kröller-Müller Museum.
