Object Description

A fine Minton Aesthetic Movement pottery beer jug probably designed by Christopher Dresser and decorated by Henry Stacy Marks (British, 1829-1898) dating from around 1880.

Henry Stacy Marks was a renowned pre-Raphaelite painter who supplemented his painting income with carrying out occasional decorative for various patrons including Minton.

The jug stands raised on a narrow round pedestal base with a globe shaped body and tall funnel shaped neck with a shaped top rim with a pouring spout and applied with a handle. The body of the jug is decorated with framed portrait roundels titled OCTOBER; HOP; JOHN BARLEYCORN and BACCHUS the collar around the neck decorated with a continuous frieze containing love birds with decorative low relief banding which is also applied to the handle and around the lower body of the jug. The jug is not apparently marked however is a Minton recorded design.
