Object Description

A highly decorative early 20th century (circa 1910) Oriental ebonised and brass octagonal occasional table, possibly retailed by Liberty & Co. of London.

The table consists of an ebonised octagonal top with finely engraved brass brackets to each corner, a recessed circular panel with applied circular brass Chinese symbol to the centre, this a symbol of longevity, the recessed panel having a removable glass top.

The top is supported on an octagonal base with finely engraved corner brackets to both the top and bottom of all corners, four sides with applied brass lotus flower mount, the lotus flower a symbol of purity and rebirth and four sides with brass bat handles, the bat a symbol of luck and good fortune, one of the sides having a secret opening door.

The Oriental and exotic styles of furniture were very popular in Europe during the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries with many areas in the Middle East, India, China and Japan producing similar items of superb quality, similar tables were sold by retailers such as Liberty of London during this time.
