Object Description

This huge armorial Charles II silver tankard was made in London in 1683 by Thomas Jenkins and measures 8.25 inches to the top of the thumb piece by almost 10 inches from the handle to the lip of the lid and is 5.5 inches in dia across the top and 6.25 inches across the base. It has a large scrolled handle with reeded decoration running along it leading to a shield shaped terminal at the base, there is a large hinge at the top of the handle with a cast and scrolled thumb piece to the lid. The lid is stepped with cut decoration to the front edge and the body has a large armorial to the front with a reeded girdle below and a reeded skirt to the base of the body. It holds over half a gallon approx 2.5 litres and is fully and clearly hallmarked to the side and the lid and is in excellent condition and weighs a very hefty 45 ounces or 1378 grams.
