Object Description
A single leaf from an English Medieval Bible taken from the book of Zephaniah. The vellum page features a handwritten text, in Latin, arranged in two columns. It presents vivid rubrication, words and sentences transcribed in red to highlight their importance. The initial letters of each passage are beautifully decorated in red and blue pigment. The reduced size of the page would have lent itself well to being transported around, so the Bible’s owner could have been a crusader, a pilgrim or a traveller.
Date: Circa AD 1250-1275
